Welcome! We're thrilled that you've come across our blog and pray that it will point you to our personal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In 2003, while dating, Dan & Christi's eyes were opened to the plight of the orphan. God used the trip that Christi took to the Dominican Republic to change our hearts forever!

As our lives moved forward, we found ourselves several years later in new jobs, Christi attending Lincoln Christian University to complete her Bachelor's degree, and asking the Lord to 'break our hearts for what breaks His'... indeed He has!

We began asking the Lord how HE would use us to care for the orphan and the widow and He led us to serve at Lifesong for Orphans. Christi began serving full-time as the Program Coordinator working with churches across the country to launch orphan care ministries and church adoption funds as well as partnering with Both Hands Foundation to help remove the financial barrier to adoption.

After Christi took a short term trip to Guatemala in 2009, focused on orphan care, evangelism, and caring for widows, the Lord re-ignited the fire inside our hearts for serving cross-culturally. God used this trip to make the cry of the orphan more personal and used several passages in Scripture, including Psalm 68, Psalm 82, and Isaiah 1:17 to show us how He would have us personally 'defend the cause of the fatherless' and spread His name throughout the nations.

God used that trip to do many things in our hearts! He used the stories and photos that Christi returned home with to touch Dan's life and burden his heart for the people of
Guatemala as well as the orphan. It was shortly after this trip that God called us to adoption. He made it clear that adoption was Plan A for our family... and so we began the process. After much prayer and counsel, God showed us the beautiful country of Ethiopia. In May of 2011 we traveled to meet our son for the first time and in June of 2011, we welcomed our sweet Malakai Aweke into our home!

As you can imagine, these trips had an incredible impact on our lives! Not only we were meeting our child for the first time and learning about his birth country, but we were also finding ourselves once again face to face with the orphan, the widow, and the oppressed. While on this journey, the Lord confirmed that He was indeed calling us to serve on the mission field, but that we must surrender to His plan and His timing for this. He has truly been working in our hearts and minds for a long time preparing us for this next step.

As we asked the Lord to show us where He would have us serve, we were immediately drawn to both Ethiopia and Guatemala. Again, after much prayer and counsel, God made it clear that He was calling us to Guatemala! We soon found ourselves settling into life with a 2 year old, Dan serving at a new job with Kingdom purpose, and expecting baby #2 in March of 2012. As we continued to ask the Lord to reveal His timing, He began opening doors in Guatemala. We talked with several ministries and in December 2011 took a trip to serve and asked the Lord to confirm where He was calling us.
In March of 2012 we welcomed our baby girl, Finley Eden, into our family and prepared to move in June 2012.

God said GO! We said 'Here am I Lord, send me'.... we took a step of faith and moved our family to Guatemala to serve orphaned and vulnerable children.

During our first year in Guatemala, the Lord lead us to a little boy in Ethiopia that needed a family. Malakai started praying for this little boy and eventually we felt the Lord prompting us that he was OUR son. In October 2013 we brought Titus into our family.

Just when we thought that life could not get any busier ;), we found out we were expecting our 4th child. Isaias Daniel Ucherek was born November 19, 2014.

Being on staff with Orphan Outreach has been the biggest blessing! Orphan Outreach is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to glorifying the Lord through reaching out to the millions of at-risk children throughout the world. Orphan Outreach currently has 5 ministry sites in Guatemala which include: an orphanage called Little House of Refuge, a teenage girls home called My Special Treasure, and 3 schools – Good Shepherd Christian Academy, Guatemalan Association of Down Syndrome, and The Ravine School/Chimaltenango Garbage Dump. Check out this page to learn more.

We are  serving and spreading the name of Jesus throughout the nation of Guatemala under the care of Orphan Outreach. In doing so, we will be evaluating existing programs, making sure goals are being met at each ministry site, evaluating each child to create a plan to ensure they are thriving, building an alliance of Guatemalan churches and pastors to encourage indigenous adoption and foster care which will lead to the downsizing of orphanages, construction oversight, music ministry to the children, and much more. We are so thrilled to see how the Guatemalan church is starting to understand what Scripture says about caring for the orphan and humbled that God would allow us to be a part of this change!
